A toner should be your next step after exfoliating (or after the cleansing step on days where you don’t exfoliate). Toners come in many varieties, but it is important to distinguish between toners and astringents. While they do similar things for your skin, astringents are typically alcohol-based. Alcohol in skincare products is definitely something you want to avoid. Sure, it may make your skin tighter, but it will also dry out your skin, which is more damaging in the long run. There are plenty of toners on the market that aren’t astringents, but check the ingredients for alcohol just in case! A good toner will remove any leftover residue from the cleansing stage, rebalance the pH of your skin, soothe the skin, and hydrate it. Like with other skincare products, you may need to try out different kinds of toners before you find one that really works for you. If you have super sensitive skin, you may have a hard time using most toners. In this case, you can always opt for a natural toner. Green tea makes a really great toner because it’s full of antioxidants. You can even use tea bags you have already brewed to make the toner. Green tea is naturally very soothing and won’t bother your skin.

How to Use Toner?

Toner is one of the simplest skincare products out there. You can either wet a cotton pad with the product and swipe it over your skin, or you can put the toner in a spray bottle and mist your face. If using a cotton pad, start applying the toner in your T zone, then move on to the rest of your face. Your T zone is the oiliest, so it needs the most toner. Allow your skin to air dry completely before you move on to the next skincare step. It’s vital that you allow each skincare product to absorb thoroughly before you put on another layer. You can pat the toner to help it dry more quickly, but don’t use a towel or cloth to pat it dry, as you’ll just end up absorbing the product into the fabric! You should use toner every day during both your morning and nighttime routines. You can also carry around a small spray bottle with toner in it to use as a refresher throughout the day. If you notice your makeup getting oily or dry and cakey, spritzing on a little toner can really help!
