Pulmonary tuberculosis is a bacterial infection of the lungs.  The bacteria may infect other parts of the body but the high levels of oxygen and blood in the lungs make them an ideal target location.  The bacteria is slow growing and it is highly resistant to pharmaceutical antibiotics.  Medical treatment usually takes some months and a variety of different medications are typically used once the lungs are infected.

Some have a latent TB infection meaning the bacteria is in the body but the body’s own immune system is preventing the disease from spreading, especially to the more susceptible areas.  Those with compromised immune systems become more likely to contract tuberculosis.  Until the 1980s, TB had become very rare.  With diseases that weaken the immune system becoming more common it too has also recently become more common.  Those with latent TB will not pass it on to others while those with active pulmonary tuberculosis are contagious.  The infection is spread through coughing, sneezing or other exchanges of air from the lungs.  While TB is contagious it does take prolonged exposure for it to be transmitted others.

Pulmonary tuberculosis is a type of pneumonia.  Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs and may be bacterial, viral, or fungal.  Tuberculosis infection is a particular bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that is very difficult to eliminate.  Information regarding pneumonia in general may also be of help if active TB is encountered.
