A head or brain injury can vary from a bump on the head to a TBI (traumatic brain injury). Since the forehead and head have a rich supply of blood a bump on the head while playing sports or other activities can result in bleeding under the skin producing a significant bump referred to as a hematoma. If the bump or injury is severe this can also lead to bleeding in the brain itself (intracranial hematoma ) or a TBI that can include damage to the brain tissue itself. With an intracranial hematoma the bleeding can cause swelling in the brain area and put pressure on the brain causing additional problems.

In the case of a potential brain injury watch for these symptoms of a serious condition:

•  Unconsciousness

•  Confusion

•  Disorientation

•  Persistent or worsening headache

•  Imbalance

•  Vomiting

•  Memory loss

•  Mood changes

The human brain is the most complicated organ of the body and an injury to the brain can cause a wide variety of long term problems. Muscles may no longer respond properly, vision, smell or hearing may be affected. Speech or word recollection may be difficult. Other memory functions are often impaired, reasoning or processing may be impacted and it may result in emotional and personality changes.

Recovery is sometimes slow and requires a great deal of patience on the part of the injured and the caregivers.
