Dementia is not a disease but rather the description of a group of symptoms that are common to a number of diseases. The symptoms include loss of memory, language skills, judgment, social skills and other functions of the brain to the point that the loss interferes with a person’s normal functioning. A person may exhibit changes in mood and social behavior with dementia. Loss of memory alone is not regarded as dementia but rather when there is a loss of at least two of the major brain functions.
Dementia symptoms are unusual below age 60 and the risk increases with advanced age. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 50 to 60 percent of dementia cases. Other diseases are Lewy body disease, vascular dementia (many small strokes), and the medical conditions such as Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Pick’s disease can lead to dementia. Nutritional deficiencies, chronic use of alcohol, infections of the brain, and tumors can all lead to symptoms of dementia.
