Brie is a type of French made with cow’s milk. It is slightly pale in colour with a greyish tinge under the rind. The rind is a white mould and is edible. It derives its name from the region where it originated. It is a popular dessert cheese. It is very soft and melts quickly when warmed. It tastes fruity and creamy.
There are two types of brie cheese : Brie de Meaux and Brie de Melun. There are many varieties of brie. Some of them are – plain brie, herbed varieties, double & triple brie etc.
1. Brie cheese is a good source of protein.
2. It contain high saturated fat which may increase risk of heart diseases.
3. Brie cheese serves as a good source of vitamin B-12 and B2.
4. It contains phosphorus which is good for our bones and teeth.
5. It contains high levels of sodium, so should be consumed in moderation.
Brie cheese can be used either raw or melted over food. It is purchases as a full wheel (shown in the picture) or a segment of it. It should be refrigerated. In case you do not want to consume the rind, you can scoop out the soft center. Underipe brie is hard while the overripe ones are too soft. Once it turns ripe it should be consumed within a few days. It is important to know that the ripening process stops once it is sliced. Brie cheese goes best with champagne.
